What is Short Mat Bowls
Short Mat Bowls is an indoor variation of lawn bowls played on a shorter, specially designed mat. It's played on a 45-foot long by 6-foot wide mat with regular lawn bowls and a heavier jack, and it includes a central block to add challenge and strategy.
Playing Area:
Mat Size: The mat is 45 feet long and 6 feet wide.
Block: A white wooden block is placed in the center of the mat. This forces players to use the bias of the bowls and to aim around the block, adding to the skill and strategy of the game.
Fenders: Fenders are at each end of the mat, defining the limits of the ditch area and protecting players and the hall from heavily bowled bowls.
Equipment:
Bowls: Regular lawn bowls are used for short mat bowls.
Jack: A heavier jack is used compared to lawn bowls which is placed on the jack line.
Gameplay:
Object: The object is for each player or team to take turns rolling bowls down the mat, aiming to get their bowls closer to the jack than their opponents.
"Dead" Bowls: Bowls that hit the block or land in the ditch are removed.
Bias: Players utilize the bias of the bowls to maneuver around obstacles and achieve desired outcomes.
